A Hard History

The Khmer Rouge genocide (1975-1978) followed by the Vietnamese occupation (1979-1989) resulted in the deaths of 1.5 million people and displacement of another 3 million.

These events destroyed societal fabric and norms, decimated knowledge bases, and crippled infrastructure. The impact is still felt today by the next generations of Cambodian people.

Reality of Rural Cambodia

Short Lifespan

The average lifespan for the country is 66 years; these numbers are even lower in rural populations

Extreme Weather

Cambodia has two seasons: hot and rainy. Villagers contend with alternating soaring temperatures, heavy rains, and flooding risks

High Poverty Levels

37% of families make less than $1.50 USD/day with more poverty concentrated in the rural areas

Illness

Access to sanitation is limited and medical standards are highly variable. Mosquito-borne diseases and bacterial infections are prevalent year-round

Lack of Clean Water

With little government infrastructure, 4 million families are without any access to clean drinking water

Poor Education

Few rural families can afford for their children to attend school beyond basic instruction in Cambodian that ends in Grade 8

The Cambodian people have both the need and the desire to make life better and we have the ability to help
